Adventures of Pete!

Pete Pan James – Dec 31, 1998 to Nov 3, 2012

.
Pete was a most wonderful family member. He gleefully took part in so many adventures with us, and cherished every new turn on that path. He was born on New Year’s Eve and joined us several weeks later on a quick flight direct from Edmonton International. We greeted Pete at the airport and let him wander around the terminal a bit to get his first sniffs of the North.
.
We were only just living in Fort Smith a few weeks when Pete arrived. By the end of March of 1999, we had purchased our current home and he had even more places to hide bones and run around.

.
Pete’s first birthday party.
.
We once had a huge woodchuck stealing peas from our garden and living under our greenhouse. The scent drove Pete nuts, and after almost two years of stalking the critter, Pete fulfilled his breed’s goal and cornered the woodchuck in a corner by the garage door one day. He was proud beyond belief, and readily accepted our heavy praise.
.
No one will forget Pete’s taking off to Keizer’s house a block away to try his luck with their German Shepard-ish dog Mia. Even after being fixed, his endless tries with her brought on constant jokes of him needing a ladder or a step stool.
.
After being attacked and bitten by a much larger dog, Pete had to wear a cone on our five day Cline River family hiking trip. The first couple days of running along the trail he would dip under some logs that he knew he should be able to fit under, but the cone would stop him. The next day we removed the cone and he would race up and down the train having a blast! By the forth day, he would take the 5 minute break every hour with the rest of us, exhausted, curled up on a pack. At the parking lot at the end of the trail, he was walking a little further ahead, and just climbed in to an open van door of some other tourists. After some firm voiced coaxing, he begrudgingly came out and walked the 40m over to our truck.
.

.
He so thoroughly enjoyed our family trips to Pine Lake and Germain Lake in the Summers… A wary eye was needed to avoid him discovering a fresh green slimy bison pie to roll around in. He was always mischievous if he thought he could get away with it; yet so well behaved in most all other aspects of life. His wonderful demeanor and empathic nature garnered him a multitude of admirers amongst our friends and family.
.
Last night, Pete passed away peacefully…

Petey’s Departure

It was a sad day in the Denesik household last night. Petey went back to Aunty Vi’s yesterday afternoon. Petey knew something was up because he kept following me around the house all day. He didn’t sleep much during the day, and when Dennis came home from work Petey just sat staring at me while Dennis and I sat at the table talking. The good news is that when Vi came to take him home he was happy to see her and gave Vi a warm welcome. I’m sure Vi didn’t spoil him toooooooo much last night. The month Petey was here went pretty fast.

Napping Pete

The snow is gone and Petey has left a body imprint on the mat outside the back door. He moves from the sun to the shade, no wonder he has been going to bed early. He is all tuckered out from the fresh air. All the snow has melted and left warm temperatures behind. Plus 18c yesterday and 17c today. It is suppose to cool down and rain tomorrow but back to double digits on Thursday. That will make Petey happy, right now he is busy watching the ants running around. Once in a while he puts out a paw and tries to stop them, then he goes back to napping. We’re going for a car ride to drop off Jacob’s supper for work tonight. It is a chore but Petey toughs out the car ride just to feed Jacob. Elizabeth took Pete for a run yesterday after work, needless to say that finished him off for the rest of the evening, he was toast, he could hardly work up enough energy to pick up Jacob from work last night. He is patiently waiting for everyone to return home from work and school.
Bye for now!

Small Dog, Big Suck…

While you guys are languishing in Europe , playing on the beach, Petey has been trying his best to weather out a nasty Snowstorm in Edmonton. How can he be expected to go potty on the grass when it is piled high with snow. Therefore he must do his business on the patio by the barbecue. Much to my dismay he continued this practice until we could shovel a path onto the grass for him. Good thing he is soooooo cute. He woke Uncle Den last night at 4 am because his blanket came off and he needed to be covered up again. Uncle Den is such a softy. The snow has finally stopped and the sun is shining again. It is even warm enough that Pete wants to go and sit outside on the back step. Petey continues to be vigil about keeping a close watch on the neighbors cat and the rabbits. They all seem to know when Petey is at the living room window , that’s when they parade across the front sidewalk. He waits patiently for Uncle Den, Elizabeth and Jacob to come home. As they come in one at a time he goes back to the window to watch for them. When Jacob works after school Petey will go downstairs 2 or 3 times looking for him . When I take him to pick up Jacob from work he sits and stares at the Zellers door waiting for Jacob to appear. Petey is resting now, he became tired while watching the kids at the park playing. Time to say bye for now and clean Petey’s dish. Have fun thinking about us and the melting snow.

On Training and Relaxing…

It was nice to hear from Rick and that all is going well. I still believe that Petey is Bi -Polar. It was cloudy for a while yesterday and he moped around. As soon as the Sun came out he was full of energy . Petey loves to sleep in the sun. He is resting by the kitchen window right now, not sure if he should have sunscreen on . I’ll talk to him about the dangers of not wearing sunscreen and see what he thinks. Elizabeth took him for a run at Hawerluk Park a couple of days ago and he is still getting over it. Surprise, Elizabeth is taking him again tonight. He should be a lean , mean fight’in machine by the time Auntie Vi comes home. Jacob is going to teach him how to bench press. Poor Pete. If his blanket comes off in the middle of the night, he wakes me or Uncle Den to cover him up again. Talk about who is training who. He still patiently waits for everybody to come home at the end of the day. He’s keeping us safe from cats and big rabbits. The neighbors cat just sits in front of the living room window tormenting Pete, so I open the window and Pete scares the heck out of the cat. Pete has just came in to say he needs a pee break. I better let him, Pete says HI (in doggy talk of course).

Fits Right In

Glad to hear that Grandma Vi made it to Italy safe and sound. Pete was missing her badly. He arrived on Sunday with a big bag of food, (are you coming back Auntie Vi?) and seemed to be settling in quite nicely. Pete’s favorite place here is the big chair by the front window. He would suddenly jump off the chair and go lay in his bed, he didn’t sleep, he would just lay there looking sad. By Wednesday we realized he would go to the bed because it smelled of Grandma Vi’s house Since the weather has warmed up , Pete likes to go outside in the afternoon and sleep in the sun on the deck. As the sun moves around the house he moves to stay in the sun. Do they make sunscreen for dogs? He is so funny to watch. He goes for walks everyday , sometimes twice a day. On Tuesday night he tried to push his bed into our room so he could sleep with us at night time. What a smart dog, he seems to sleep better at night now that he is in our room. Pete had no interest in climbing stairs this time . He stayed on the main floor until about 3 am this morning when for some reason he decided that Elizabeth needed him to sleep with her. Jacob is on Spring Break this week so he was happy to have Pete here to play with. Pete is outside with Jacob and his friends refereeing their game of basketball, then he’s going with them to get a Slurpee. Pete likes to sit under Uncle Den’s chair at meal time because he is mostly likely to drop food on himself , so when he gets up from the table, it hits the floor and Pete is there to help him clean up. Pete has no interest in the paperboy or the mailman this time,it’s still early , that could change. He doesn’t look sad anymore , especially when it’s time for a walk. time to go, take care and Pete says Hello (in doggy talk of course).

Preparing for Pete’s Sleepover

I might have to buy some pull-ups to put on Pete at night so that i won’t have to get up and let him out. Jacob will be happy to have Pete here while he is on Spring break next week. Pete will be going for lots of walks to visit his doggy friend Cooper.

Another Sleepover

I forgot to mention earlier that Pete must be getting prepared for the sleepover at Uncle Den & Auntie Deb’s house. He got me up at 2:30 this morning to go outside – not sure if his main interest was peeing or checking around for any food that was left on the ground from last night. This was odd since he NEVER wakes me up in the middle of the night.

PETE – not quite “Dog of the North”

I thought Pete was a “Northern” dog. Today (Thursday) was the first day since Saturday that he would go promptly outside to do his business. On Sunday, he wanted to go outside mid-morning so I opened the door – he took a look outside – then took a look at me as if to say “I don’t think so” and then ran back up the stairs. I wish I could have taken a picture of his expression. I dutifully went out and shovelled a 6′ x 6′ spot for him in the foot of snow and he went out – reluctantly, of course. He was NOT impressed with the wind and cold. Then I had to go out again and shovel in a different spot for him to do his 2nd bit of business – even in this weather he’s very set in his ways – go figure, eh? Every day since Sunday he’s out and back in quick as a flash both morning and evening.
PS Luke wanted to know if I had a birthday party for Pete!!!! Sadly, I didn’t.

We are happy to report that we have Petey again. When Elizabeth brought Petey into the house last night he demanded a hug from all of us. Then he went looking for a treat in his dish. Much to his disappointment the dish was empty, he decided to remedy the situation by asking to go outside, where he pooped in his usual spot by the fence. Upon coming in from outside, a treat was expected to be in his dish. Who am I to disappoint such a cute little fellow. I can’t resist a good looking guy with brown eyes (Uncle Den). He then proceeded to inspect the house to make sure his spot was available in the big chair by the window. After settling in for the evening he felt it was his duty to let us know when the 5 AM morning newspaper arrived. Such a good little puppy. He is now waiting patiently on the chair by the front window to go and visit my sister and her cat Simba. We hope that you guys had a great Christmas , we spent ours in Mexico. The weather here has been warm since getting back, perfect weather to take Petey for a walk. Bye for now !

Pete

Dear grandma Vi,
.
Aunty Debbie read me your email. I was saddened to hear that you think I didn’t miss you. You left with me Uncle Den because you knew that I would be well taken care of. It’s a warm place to be fed, watered, walked and loved, just like your house.. It’s true I do love them but I love you also. You know I would go with anybody who was willing to take me for a walk or a car ride. I am happy to report that I still enjoy harassing the dogs next door. I hope they stay on their side of the fence though. Aunty Debbie still won’t let me in the kitchen while she is cooking and even though I still whimper at night Uncle Den still won’t let me in bed with him. At least Elizabeth and Jacob let me cuddle with them in bed, grown ups are so peculiar. I did wake Elizabeth up at 2:30 am last night to go outside, she didn’t seem to mind, good thing I’m soooo cute and cuddly. My favorite spot is still in the big chair in the living room by the window. Time to go outside and bug those dogs again. It wasn’t easy typing with these little paws, I’m tired, maybe a nap would be better. Aunty debbie said it’s warm enough for me to go out for a walk, I’m hope she’s right. Bye for now, see you in a couple of days.
Love Pete.
.
PS. Here comes the mail man. He laughs at me when I bark at him.

Pete whimpered for a couple of hours when he went to bed the first night (Wednesday) he came back home with me. On Thursday and thereafter he was fine but he did go to bed long before me every night. He missed them a lot – wasn’t even happy to see me – (editor’s note: surely not actually true) when Debbie dropped him off he just stood at the door waiting to go with her again. Their family missed him too. The fact that he crawled into bed with Jacob an hour or so before Jacob got up probably added to him liking it there but he’s still not going to sleep with me. I’m sure having more people around to pay attention to him pleased him too. What else can I say, he just likes it there better – no more excuses (LOL) . So, tonight he’s gone to visit them for a couple of days – Elizabeth picked him up awhile ago. They bought him a name customized Advent calendar, hat and neckband. I’m only keeping one treat in the calendar at a time – he’d probably go bezerk if he saw it full. Hope you’re having a lot of fun!!!

Well, Pete does not like the cold at all. The snow he barely tolerates, but he has to do his business somewhere, so the snow it is. I tried to teach him how to shovel snow the other day, imagine my surprise when he ran for the door instead. He is the first dog I ever saw trying to poop without his butt touching the snow,he looks so funny. We think he is hilarious. He has learned to crawl into bed with the kids as they wake up, on week days he goes to Jacob’s room, he’s the last one up for school. He patiently waits for them to get home one at a time, he keeps a vigil at the front window watching for them.

Dennis and I took Pete out to Uncle Willy’s and Aunty Deb’s cabin yesterday. Their dog Blake tried to make Pete his special friend but Pete told him nicely he wasn’t interested. Blake persisted until Pete finally snarled at him to back off. Will and Dennis then took both dogs out in the snow to get the quads and load them on a trailer to bring them back to Edmonton. Pete loves the snow as long as he keeps moving and his little paws don’;t get cold. He stayed awake all the way out there , but was tired from his play date with Blake and slept part of the way home. Last night he was barking and growling in his sleep. Right now he is downstairs watching and learning about the Grey Cup. It is dropping down to -18 tonight and cooling down this week. It suppose to warm up for your return. Pete said he wants Grandma vi to put up a xmas tree so he doesn’t have to go outsidein the cold to find a tree to water. Really, that’s what he said, bark for bark.

Pete has been busy making friends with Jacob’s friend’s dog, Cooper. I took Pete over to my sisters yesterday to introduce him to her cat Simba. Not to worry, Simba is an indoor cat who was quite curious about Pete. At first they just stared at each other, then all of a sudden Pete decided to get closer. Alas Simba did not appreciate Pete’s gesture of friendship and the fight was on. Luckily to my having a little forethought on the matter i kept Pete’s leash on him and I was able to quickly pull him away before the cat could strike, the next hour was the two of them staring at each other. Pete was happy to leave and come home to his lazy boy chair. It was a trying few hours for him. Jacob took him for a walk last night to visit Cooper. He loves crawling under the afghan with the kids when their watching TV. He sleeps through the delivery of our early morning newspaper now, yahoooo. He didn’t even wake up when Elizabeth and her friends came in late Saturday night (some watch dog). We’re still not sure what to do about his snoring. It’s Monday night football tonight so he will be downstairs learning about football while sleeping under the quilt with Jacob.

Pete loves to go for car rides. He is very disappointed if he doesn’t get invited for all the rides. We had to explain to him that dogs are not allowed at football games or at indoor soccer games, even when they’re as cute as he is. He loves to go outside and terrorize our neighbors two boxers next door. Nothing like a big wooden fence to give him all the courage and protection required. He is exhausted by the time he is finshed running along the fence, so he comes in and naps in the big chair. Only once in awhile does he bark now when our newspapers are delivered between 2am and 5am. I think Pete and him have an understanding, if he can deliver our paper while stepping lightly on the outside steps Pete will let him pass quietly, but if the steps squeak, watch out. He still trys to get into our bed to sleep. You can feel him staring at you in the dark, I just tell him to go to bed then he leaves. Unlcle Den vacumed him the other day to get rid of his loose hair, he loved it. Pete and Uncle Den are out for their nightly walk. Jacob and Elizabeth are out with friends. I will enjoy the quiet.

????? ???

Hey Rick that darn dog of yours poops 5 to 18 times a day and holy crap do you guys not feed him he eats pretty near steady all day long. The poor guy was starvin Lord thunderin Jesus! why do you guys have a dog and then starve them? Your mom brought over some food but I already had to buy another bag. I know you will pay me back but u would think she would have
brought over enough to last a week at least. I do not know how much to give him so I asked my Friend (he has had dogs his whole life) and he said he said when he is full he will stop eatin, just keep food in his dish. I gave up on that little dish that Vi brought over… and started to
use a 4 litre ice cream pail now I just have to fill it once a day. that little dish that Vi brought over just does not cut it.. Now I know why Vi was grinning when she said give him one cup of food at a time she knew that I would be going steady hauling food. But I out smarted her now I am using the ice cream pail.
.
And those things for cleanin his teeth, Crap! He ate those in 2 days. I also gave up buying those little 10 or 15 lb bags of food I do not like going to the store everyday,,,,,,,I was at this Discount store and they had 100 lb bags of dog food it was a nice lookin bag it was all Yellow on the outside and in big letters it said DOG FOOD.I am not sure who makes it but Pete just luvs it he already ate 4 liters today and I picked it up at 11.30 am ,,,
.
And it was only $2.99 and the guy said the stuff his not movin too good, so if I paid CASH he would not charge me the GST. so I took 2 bags at that price and I was tellin him about you guys starvin Pete and he said the second bag was on him and he taped a little bow on the front and printed To Pete LOVE the Fred the Discount store clerk.. I think he had a tear in his eye and as I was walkin out he said when your Nephew gets home bring him by so he can teach him to have some respect for man’s best friend.
.
He is also gettin kinda lazy. the first few days he was running all over the place and now he just eats, poops and sleeps the rest of the day. I have to drag him out for his walk. And speakin of lazy, I had to put the phone book in front of the ice cream pail so he could stand on it to reach the bottom of the pail easier.
.
Well I should go. Pete wants to go out for yet another poop.
.

????? ???

I took Pete for a walk last nite and he got the poop scared out of him. He was vibrating like an out of tune outboard boat motor. We were walking down a back lane about 10.30 pm and 2 dobermans came up to him full force as he was having a leisurely pee behind their chain link fence. He whimpered and ran so hard and fast that he yanked the leash right outa my hand. I finally got him back and under control and those Dobermans were going absolutely crazy! Pete was shakin so bad I could hardly hold on to him. I tried putting him down when I got close to the dobermans, but he dug his claws into me and was not lettin go of me at all……… Holy moley was it FUNNY! (at least for me).
.
THEN! he realized there was a chain link fence between him and the Dobermans… Well, that was it. I could not hold him no more! He jumped out of my arms and was at the fence snarlin, growlin & barking (his fur was standing straight up) at those 2 dogs. I know what Pete was thinkin, “I would flip’in kill you if it was not for this fence”. At least in his own little mind. The Dobermans were trying to chew through the heavy galvanized wire fence just to get at the little appetizer, but Pete was right there, his nose about a half an inch from the fence just giving the those 2 dogs some “what for”….. They were frothing at the mouth wanting to get to him. I was afraid I was going to break the leash trying drag him outta there. For the rest of the way home he had a little more spring in his step; Like I am the TOP DOG…. He was probably thinkin, “those pufter DOBERMANS, they’re very lucky that fence was there!”

????? ???

He’s a wild man! This dog luvs to chase cats! He pulled the leash right
out of my hand and was gone. I tried to keep up but after 3 blocks I
just gave up. Last I seen, he was headed for Northgate Mall. He came
home about 5 hours later, no worse for wear. We were over by Grand trunk
Pool 113 Street and 132 Ave, so I do not know how he found his way back
but he did he was thirsty and hungry, ( with the leash draggin behind, I
will pick a new one up and keep the bill for you). I am going to put
the Green cable on him and hook it around my waist next time. But
then he might drag ME to Northgate! To heck with the leash, I’ll just let him
run because he obviously knows how to get home.

????? ???

Pete does not like to hang Xmas lights. Has he ever spent more
time outside than it takes to pee?????????????? He is one tough dog when another dog walks by when he is lookin out the front window though. He starts snarlin, barkin, growlin, drooling at the mouth. I gotta hold him back cause I think he is gonna go through the window to gets his teeth into those other mutts. Put him on the front lawn though and he does not make a sound when a dog goes by.

Pete pissed on my ladder that I was using to hang lights. I guess he wanted me to know that he did not like being outside. I thought he was going to get a sore throat from all the whimpering and it was plus 9 and no wind! What the heck does he do when it gets cold?!? I know I hate the cold more than anybody, which is why we did not go outside until it warmed up in the afternoon, (because it was plus 4 in the morning, too cold for me). So when it warmed up to plus 9 we did the lights.

Glad to hear you made it safe and sound. Your granddog Pete is doing
very well. He has gone for a walk with uncle den to check your mail and
to mail some letters. Pete was also outside today learning how to change
oil in a Quad. Yesterday we taught Pete how to hang Xmas lights
outside. He is learning so many new things. He is alot of fun to have
around and he certainly tries to use those big puppy dog stares at us
all. He listens very well. He loves sitting in the lazy boy chair by
the window, he sleeps and keeps a close eye on the neighborhood. We
keep the drapes open a bit so he can see outside. He watched Monday
night football downstairs with Jacob and Dennis. He spent most of his
time sleeping under Jacob’s blanket. He snores quite loudly. We were
going to try to put a nose strip on him but figured it would hurt
taking it off (just kidding of course). We just turn up the volume on the TV instead.
